Who We Are
The Bateman Foundation, a national public charity, inspires a lasting relationship with nature through the lens of art, and is currently one of the only non-profits in Canada primarily using artwork to promote a connection to nature and the environment.
Established in 2012 by world-renowned artist and naturalist Robert Bateman, the Foundation grew from his philosophy that by helping people reconnect with nature, they will be inspired to conserve and protect it. Through educational programs, community collaborations and gallery exhibitions, we are inspiring a generation of people to build a deeper relationship with the natural world.
- Nature is magic and all people deserve to be connected to it, especially our children
- Nature is the focus, art is the medium, education is the outcome
- Exposure to nature is essential for our health
- Nature is an infinite source of reason, imagination, and invention
One of the Foundation’s core initiatives is the Gallery of Nature, an interactive art gallery that overlooks Victoria’s dynamic inner harbour, located in the historic Steamship Terminal building. The Gallery showcases the magic and beauty of nature, and hosts the largest collection of original and rare works by world-renowned Canadian artist and naturalist, Robert Bateman, along with a rotation of nature-inspired exhibits and a full schedule of educational and public programs. We have expanded our gallery programs to include outdoor education to learn and sketch in nature. Our vision is to reconnect a generation of children to the natural world.
What Can You Do?
Give Children the Gift of Nature
Our children are more disconnected from nature than ever before. Due to the constant pressures of technology and social media, they are struggling with alarming levels of depression, anxiety and nature deprivation.
Many children spend more than 6 hours per day on screens and less than 30 minutes per week in nature.
The Bateman Foundation’s NatureSketch program aims to rebuild children’s relationship with nature through the simple art of sketching. Guided by an artist and naturalist, the program develops creativity and skills, builds confidence and helps reduce nature deprivation in our communities.
Your donation will fund art supplies, naturalists and field trips for schools, and help The Bateman Foundation to reconnect a generation of children to the natural world.
